Applying for a new job?

This article is for those who go through the same pain as I do and it is called – writing a cover letter. Every time I apply for a new job, I tailor my resume (CV) and cover letter.

I found this article on USA Today and thought it was quite helpful. I am sure you have read many similar resources and tips on how to write a professional and catchy cover letter. This should not be new to you but it will refresh your memory.

Here, I will outline the keys points mentioned in the article.

1. Do not write “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom it May Concern.” It does not sound personal. You are a unique individual and your cover letter should relay that message to a potential employer. It is better to find a real person to address (use company website or LinkedIn).

2. Write a killer opening paragraph. The paragraph that will tick and stick.

3. Say why you want to work for this company. When you are passionate about a particular job and it is your dream company, it should not be difficult to find the rights words. Do it from the heart.

4. Always use the key words from the description of the job BUT do not just simply copy and paste the description into your cover letter.

5. Do not re-write your resume in the cover letter. It should be something special about you, your skills, and experiences that lead the reader to look at your resume.

6. Always proof read and not just the cover letter but even a text message or an email, especially when you are writing to a person for the first time. You want to make a good impression.

Good Luck!
